Welcome to the Steininger winery!
Making good wine and sparkling wine is a way of life and a fascinating task. As an old wine-grower’s family, our ancestors taught us that the wine simply gets better if you take care of every single vine by hand and with emotion. In the same way, we want to keep it in today’s fast-paced time and pass it on to our youth.
The three Daughters
We three sisters grew up with the wine and have experienced from an early on how much joy our parents bring wine and sparkling wine (enjoyment, production and sale). They have shown us the versatility of viticulture and awakened in us the love of wine.
We are a family business in Langenlois in the Kamptal, in Lower Austria. In the Kamptal, the Grüne Veltliner has lived for centuries in perfect harmony with the primordial granite, gneiss and mica slate soils and the loess soils. Optimal terroir, perfectly ripened grapes and gentle cellar technology result in dense, harmonious, fine-fitting and long-lasting wines. The interplay of high daytime temperatures and cool nights results in a perfect variety. The Kamptal is unique due to its multifaceted richness. The climate and soils offer optimal conditions for our Grüner Veltliner, Zweigelt and our variety. The vine takes up these impressions and reflects them in the wine and gives each of our wines its personality and character.
The year 1989 was a milestone. Karl Steininger began to insect his wines according to the traditional bottle fermentation method. The highest priority was the highest quality from the very beginning. Initially an expensive hobby, but now an essential pillar of the company. Karl Steininger is one of the most important sparkling wine producers in Austria. With the varietal and vintage-pure sparkling of nine grape varieties, he has found his own Austrian sparkling wine philosophy.
You don’t think anything of creating a uniform, international taste. Since 1989 Karl Steininger has been producing sparkling wines out of the typical wines of the Kamptal – for now 8 different wines, all produced exclusively in line with the traditional bottle fermentation method, in pure variety and single vintage. (Green Veltliner Sparkling Wine, Riesling Sparkling Wine, Sauvignon Blanc Sparkling Wine, Cabernet Rose Sparkling Wine, Traminer Sparkling Wine, Muscat Sparkling Wine, Burgundy Sparkling Wine, Zweigelt Sparkling Wine and Pinot Noir). Each individual reflects the typical taste of the respective basic wine. The winery does not plan an additional variety for the future, but it should also be placed on the location, as in the still wine sector. For the past year it has been the first layer sparkling wine in Austria on sale – the Riesling Heiligenstein sekt 2008.
Behind our winery, in the middle of the vineyard, we have implemented a wine project of international standards, the Loisium, together with two other Langenloiser families. You will be welcomed in the entrance building, this “wine pavilion” was built by new York star architect Steven Holl. In his designs, he was inspired by the geometry of the old wine cellars. The building impresses with its modern architecture.
You start the tour through the vineyard into the old historical cellars. The 1 km long cellar network was staged by the Swiss architects Steiner Sarnen. Here you will experience centuries-old tradition, the mysticism of wine and modern wine culture. They also come through our cellar, which we rebuilt in 2003 and brought to the most modern standard. You can see us at work as the grapes are accompanied with love from the vineyard to the bottle.
The Loisium Hotel was also opened in September 2005. Enjoy the scent of wine combined with the secrets of a new spa experience with specially developed wine treatments. It is a fascinating hotel and architectural monument by New York architect Steven Holl in the middle of our vineyards.
