Steininger wines- individual and exciting

Every year is different – this makes our work so exciting!

Producing wine is a challenge every year. More than a hundred steps create the wine. We try to work very carefull in the vineyards at all times, so we can harvest each year healthy and ripe grapes. Each vine absorbs the impressions from nature and gives the wine its personality.

Our philosophy is to make wines, which show the fruit and the character of the grape. We love the stylistics, which we receive because of the cool climate and the terroir of the Kamptal – the flavors are clear, proud and expressive.

We focus on the main varieties of Kamptal , Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. These varieties are very attractive to us because they produce because of the different vinyards and the different vintage conditions very interesting wines .

Single vineyard wines

As we all know, the best Rieslings come from bedrock weathering and soils. The bottom has only a small humus layer and under it is rock. For the vines it is harder to grow in depth. The location, soil conditions and the manual effort are the reasons why many vineyards of this kind have been forgotten 10-15 years ago. Now we try to recultivate such vinyards. On the one hand this is a challenge, but on the other hand the result is great!

Riesling Seeberg

The vineyard Seeberg is located in the neighbor town of Langenlois in Zöbing. The Vinyard is 300 meters above the sea level and facing south. The climate is under the cool influence of the Waldviertel. The big temperature difference between hot days and cool nights lets the grapes ripe slowly. The terroir is mainly slate and on the top is a small humus layer of sand and clay .This soil, the location and the microclimate provide delicately fruity, spicy wines with good concentration which are underlined with the typical fruit flavors of Riesling.

This year we already have the special second harvest of this vinyard. Effort and plague have paid off, our range has gained an exceptional wine. Our Riesling Seeberg is complex and because of the location and the cultivation of the soil we achieve a wine to philosophize and to meditate.

Riesling Steinhaus

The 40 centimeter thick top soil consists of loamy and sandy clay in combination with gneiss.

Because of many different humus layers we can produce very complex wines. Due to the volcanic cuts quite a lot of loose stones are transported to the surface of the floor. On the one hand this makes the soil cultivation very difficult and on the other hand the high stone content allows storage of the daily solar energy. This leads to a particularly uniform maturation and expression of the terroir and pronounced aromas. Through that the wines have very high storage potential.

Grüner Veltliner Kittmannsberg

From the early morning until the evening this single vineyard is located in the sun. The soil consists mainly loess, which saves water and if it is necessary gives it to the vine. Through to the deep soils, the vines can root very deep and due to that they can survive long dry periods without damage. The special microclimate allows the grapes to ripe slowly and so they can stay as long as possible on the vine until they reach their physiological maturity. In the vineyard Kittmannsberg brings very concentrated and complex Grüner Veltliner.
